EU withdrawal button from June 2026: what online shops should know

From 19 June 2026, a new requirement applies to online retail in the EU: the withdrawal button. Anyone who concludes contracts with consumers through an online interface must then provide a digital withdrawal function that is accessible at any time during the withdrawal period.

This article explains what the withdrawal button is, when it applies, who it affects and how the requirement can be implemented technically. One important note up front: we are a digital agency, not a legal advisor. The information below is a technical and organisational overview, not legal advice.

Short and clear: what this is about

The withdrawal button is a button in the online shop that lets consumers declare their withdrawal in just a few clicks. It works much like the cancellation button known since 2022, only for the withdrawal of contracts concluded online. The basis is EU Directive 2023/2673, which is being transposed into German law.

Note: not legal advice.

The legal assessment of your specific case belongs in the hands of a qualified legal advisor. This article does not replace a review by a lawyer and reflects the situation at the time of publication.

When does the obligation apply?

The key date is 19 June 2026. For contracts concluded from that date onwards, the withdrawal function must be in place. The exact form is still being defined in the German legislative process, but the direction is set. Planning early avoids last-minute stress shortly before the deadline.

Who is affected by the new obligation?

It affects businesses that conclude contracts with consumers in electronic commerce through an online interface and where a right of withdrawal exists. Financial services such as loans, insurance or investments are explicitly included. Whether and exactly how individual shop setups are covered depends on the details. This is precisely where it pays to coordinate with your legal advisor.

What requirements must the button meet?

As things stand, the withdrawal function must be clearly visible, clearly labelled and accessible at any time while the withdrawal period is running. At its core, expect the following:

  • Permanently accessible: the button is available throughout the entire withdrawal period, not just on a hidden subpage.
  • Clearly recognisable: the label and placement are unambiguous, so consumers find the function without searching.
  • Confirmation page: after the click, a page follows where the necessary details are entered and submitted.
  • Receipt confirmation: the consumer receives a confirmation of the withdrawal, usually by email.

Implementation in WooCommerce and WordPress

Technically, the withdrawal button is not a large project when it is cleanly integrated into the shop and the existing processes. For shops based on WordPress, it can be integrated via WooCommerce, including a confirmation page, an automatic email and a connection to the order data. We have developed our own plugin for this: Revoker Pro maps the withdrawal process in WooCommerce, with a confirmation function, statistics and a REST API for your own evaluations.

If you are thinking about a relaunch or maintenance anyway: our work as a WordPress agency combines the legally required function with day-to-day operation, so that updates, security and new requirements come from a single source.

What shop operators can do now

  • Have it checked whether your shop falls under the withdrawal button obligation. That is a legal question for your advisor.
  • Plan the technical effort early instead of reacting shortly before 19 June 2026.
  • Integrate the withdrawal function into existing processes: order management, emails and, where relevant, accounting.
  • Add the button to your test and maintenance plan so that it keeps working after updates.

Conclusion

From 19 June 2026, the withdrawal button is a fixed part of many online shops. The technical implementation is feasible and plannable when it is tackled in good time and integrated cleanly into the shop. For the legal assessment of your case, talk to your legal advisor.
